On December 23, 2014, our lives were turned upside down when our daughter Anna Seely, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). This particular leukemia requires almost constant hospitalization throughout treatment, and many times, transplant. Her treatment consisted of four aggressive rounds of chemotherapy lasting approximately one month at time, all inpatient. Needless to say, our family balanced our lives at home with our new lives at our "hospital home", Randall Children's Hospital, as we took turns sleeping, eating, working, and exercising at the hospital. All in all, Anna's treatment lasted two days short of five months, with 133 days spent at the hospital.
The Jackson Hill Wellness Center was a blessing for my husband, Ryan, and I. We are active people by nature, and during those five months at the hospital, we craved a bit of normalcy in our lives during a very stressful time for our family. It allowed us to spend time with Anna and our son Brett, but when needed, to take a brief rest from the pressures that come with taking care of a critically ill child. The Wellness Center, I am sure, kept us centered and present when our children needed us most.
As of July 2015, I am pleased to announce that Anna is living a normal, 11-year-old girl's life. We were fortunate in that she was diagnosed with a low-risk leukemia, and achieved remission after the first round of chemotherapy. As such, our family is returning to our busy, active lifestyle that we had before she was diagnosed, and we thank Jackson Wellness Center for allowing us to maintain that lifestyle during a very critical time.
